Week of 4/11

This week in math we will continue our exploration unit.  We will continue to focus on counting forward or backward by tens beginning at any number.  An example of this would be 6, 16, 26, 36, 46, 56, 66, 76, 86, 96, 106...  We will also be discussing strategies for two digit addition.  Students will use friendly numbers and puts groups of tens and ones together to use mental math strategies.

Students will receive their new weekly words on Monday.  Please make sure your child practices their words at home each evening to prepare for their test on Friday.  During phonics this week we will also discuss plural words with s and es ending, as well as contractions.

During writer's workshop we will read a variety of books to immerse ourselves in realistic fiction writing.  We will be studying what author do to prepare students for writing their own realistic fiction stories.

Our social studies focus this week will be cardinal directions and reading maps.

I will continue to meet with small groups and individual students each afternoon for guided reading.  During this time students will read to self, have free choice writing time, and participate in a literacy rotation activity.
